Arthritis Arthritis is literally inflamed joints, which can be attributable to a variety of causes. Whatever the cause, it manifests itself as painful, stiff joints which are usually warm to the touch, particularly in the morning. It interferes with sleep patterns, further exacerbating the problem. It limits range of motion, thus interfering with exercise. These manifestations are sometimes vicious cycles; a good night's sleep and regular exercise help alleviate joint pain, but the patient can't get a good night's sleep or exercise because they are in such pain.
